It’s amazing to think that “Yellow Pages” is still a $ 31 Billion Dollar Business when you consider what it charges for what it delivers for what is a location based directory.

Consider that the information it delivers for a business is static and must be relevent for 12 months (or 15 months when you consider lead times) and cannot be changed. The pricing is expensive when you take into account the amount of information in an ad and the fact that it’s static. It’s little wonder that people are not using their Yellow Pages as much as they did in the past when most of the population has Internet access.

Yellow pages is a relic of a bygone era, it did it’s job, it served us well, it’s just not in the game of information delivery for local businesses anymore. If the Yellow Pages were truthful about their product they would ask people if they wanted a copy of the print editions they publish and if enough people said they wanted one then they should continue to charge businesses and keep on delivering.

If on the other hand not enough people wanted a copy then they should just shut up shop and move more aggressively to the internet and stop charging businesses for an obsolete product that has no market.
